Scientists just got their best look at the sun’s surface and revealed that it was hiding serious Van Gogh energy.

Astronomers released photos yesterday that were snapped by the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Maui. The images were taken while technicians were fine-tuning and testing the telescope.

The images revealed strange, feathery patterns rippling across the surface. Stanford solar physicist Ruizhu Chen, who wasn’t involved in the research, compared the swirls to the skies in Van Gogh’s “Starry Night."
