Some public officials who oversee childhood vaccinations avoid talking about them. East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control has taken a different approach with pets, and it's refreshing.

The parish website—which is a fun and useful read and a better use of your time than doomscrolling social media—lays it out plainly: if you've just moved to East Baton Rouge, you have 30 days to get your pet licensed and vaccinated by a vet here in the parish. Moved here recently and your pet is already vaccinated? Doesn't matter. "The 'extra' shot won't hurt if your pet is in good health," the site says, adding helpfully, "but take your vet's advice."

A few other things worth knowing, per the parish: if you have more than 12 animals over 4 months old, you need a kennel permit.

And for the neighbor whose dog has been yapping for something at 2 a.m.? The parish's advice is one that builds community: walk over and talk to them first. "It's surprising how often people are willing to cooperate when they become aware that their pet is keeping someone else awake."

Either way: picket fences, front porches, vaccinated pets.
