An urban farm for all
A community garden at Howell Park is place to plant seeds, learn crafts, drive an EV, eat a snowball, strike a yoga pose.
Howell Park once was a dying golf course. Now it’s home to a space-themed playground, a recreation center and Baton Roots urban farm, where people from across the parish flock each month for Sow Good Saturday.
Tomorrow is that day, and the schedule is packed with unusual activities, many centered on the planet’s original power source: the sun.
If you attend, what you learn at Sow Good could seed a few changes in your life. Get advice on what to grow in your yard. Ride in an electric vehicle and see whether you’re ready to retire the internal combustion engine. Learn new yoga poses.
You can also make a turmeric anthotype, an eco-friendly print that uses the spice and sunlight to create art.
Want to give back? Volunteer at the farm and earn a free snowball. Then write a poem about Mother Sun and share it during an open-mic poetry session hosted by Poetic Spice.
Baton Roots is an initiative of The Walls Project, which Casey Phillips started to paint murals in Baton Rouge. It has since grown into a wider effort to transform places and has expanded to Dallas and Denver.
Enjoy Sow Good from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow, Aug. 1, at Howell Park. Set your GPS for 5509 Winbourne Ave. Enter the park from Winbourne, turn right and follow the driveway past the construction.
