Lane Kiffin has gone quiet. LSU’s head football coach trolled on social media, where more than 1.1m people followed him. His posts included poems and encouragement, jokes and kind words about his former wife, scenes from Baton Rouge’s St Patrick’s Day parade, glimpses of private jets ready to carry him elsewhere.

Then, in May, it stopped.

His son, Knox, had challenged him to stay away. Kiffin accepted the wager and discovered, in winning it, that withdrawal could be its own form of progress.

“It’s been really interesting as I look back over my life and my journey—a lot of great things have come when I’ve subtracted things out of my life and eliminated them,” Kiffin told Yahoo Sports.

Sometimes, the surest way to recover a life is to stop broadcasting it.
