Mitch for president
The former infrastructure lead for President Biden is pondering a run for the highest office.
Mitch Landrieu is thinking about running for president, and he's given himself only a few months to decide.
Why it matters: The obvious one—a president from Louisiana who actually loves this place, as Landrieu does—could do a lot of good for the people who live here.
The details: In a Politico interview published yesterday, Landrieu says:
- He'll make up his mind after the November midterms, or by the first of the year at the latest. "I don't think you can wait past that, just practically."
- What he's weighing: "The reason why I would run for president is if I thought that I was best suited to do it, I thought I could win, and I thought that I can really figure out a way to bring the country together—they're all important—you gotta have them all before you pull the trigger."
The big picture: Democrats are in chaos, and no one has stepped forward to lead them. That leaves an opening for Landrieu, who has worked at every level of government and is whip-smart, streetwise and charismatic. He's also a gifted retail politician. We've watched him work a room at the state Capitol, and we've watched him win over Amtrak employees who had no idea who he was at a press conference. By the time it started, one of them was helping him fix his collar.
