If you're out on the streets of Baton Rouge Halloween night and pass a woman in overalls, a pink T-shirt and a headband, don't wonder too long. That's Ms. Rachel.

The children's educator is the second-fastest-rising costume search in the Baton Rouge area, according to Google Trends, behind Raven from "Teen Titans" and ahead of "Kill Bill," peacocks and Spider-Man.

  • Taken together, the Google lists say a lot about where the country's head is this Halloween: nostalgic, devoted to its fandoms and ready for a night off from the real world.

Meet the Baton Rouge top five:

  1. Raven. The half-human, half-demon Teen Titan spends her days keeping her emotions in check and her demonic side buried.
  2. Ms. Rachel. Rachel Accurso is the sunnier choice. Her YouTube channel, built to help babies and toddlers learn language and other early skills, has more than 21 million subscribers. One video, a visit to the Play Street Museum in Manhattan, has been watched more than 50 million times.
  3. "Kill Bill." Most versions borrow the bright yellow jumpsuit Uma Thurman wore as the revenge-bent hero of Quentin Tarantino's saga.
  4. Peacock. This one is a social media creation, with bright, elaborate feathered looks making the rounds on TikTok and Instagram.
  5. Spider-Man. A classic.

Zoom out: Nationally, the picks get stranger. Google's Frightgeist list is topped by Buddy the Unicorn, followed by the squishy NeeDoh toy and Nikki from "Obsession." Dolly Parton comes in at No. 12.

Between the lines: Google builds the Frightgeist rankings by comparing September searches with the same stretch last year. So the list shows which costumes are rising, not which ones are most popular overall.

The bottom line: Americans may be scattered across a thousand fandoms, but on this one night, most of us seem to want the same thing: to step out of our own lives for a few hours and become someone, or something, else, and eat candy.
