A road to Ardendale

A master plan for a new community is coming to life, with a parish road under construction soon to spur more housing and amenities.

A new road could unlock hundreds of acres north of Florida Boulevard for development, with construction possibly starting this year.

Why it matters: The connector would make a stretch north of Florida Boulevard more usable for housing and retail in an area where apartments are already rising and Baton Rouge Community College has a satellite campus.

The details: The road would connect Ardenwood and Lobdell, tie into a HUD-backed project west of Ardenwood and open access to about 200 acres planned for Ardendale, the master-planned community led by the EBR Housing Authority.

Under MovEBR, the parish transportation plan, the project would:

  • Cost about $16 million
  • Be built as a two-lane subdivision road
  • Include bike and pedestrian lanes

Property acquisition for the road is underway, and construction could begin by the end of the year.

What’s next: The Ardendale master plan calls for a mixed-use, mixed-income community with housing, education, job training and commercial space.

Build Baton Rouge developed the plan with the Housing Authority, East Baton Rouge Parish schools and BRCC after extensive community input.

The Housing Authority opened the first phase, Cypress at Ardendale, in 2023 with 96 affordable and workforce housing units. Future phases are planned on and around the newly opened land, with 432 units envisioned in total along with amenities.

Build Baton Rouge donated land for the housing to the Housing Autority and is also donating five acres for a YWCA early childhood education center.
