Holi draws bigger crowd downtown

Baton Rouge’s Holi Festival in downtown got bigger this year, and not just by a little.

The numbers: Attendance rose to 1,700 this year from 1,500 in 2025, according to Placer.ai data from Downtown Development District. That gives organizers a clearer sense not just of how many people came, but also of how they behaved once they got there. Data is used to manage and improve festivals to draw more people.

A little context: Holi is a Hindu festival, most associated with India, that celebrates the arrival of spring, renewal and the triumph of good over evil.

What the data shows:

  • Holi Festival visitors stayed an average of 87 minutes
  • The busiest point of the festival was around 2 p.m.
  • Attendees came from across East Baton Rouge Parish, with the strongest concentration from ZIP code 70810
  • The median attendee age was 33.4, and the average household size was 2.46 people. In other words, plenty of young families.

Beyond Baton Rouge: Some people made a day trip of it, traveling from the Northshore, St. Francisville, Hammond and New Orleans.

Best detail: The movement data even hints at what happened next. After the festival, many attendees appeared to head home. It looked, DDD's Casey Tate said, like they were leaving for nap time.

The bottom line:  A festival rooted in spring and the victory of good over evil is growing in Baton Rouge, carried here by the city’s Indian community. The crowd data suggests downtown is attracting people for more than a quick stop. It is keeping them there, which is exactly what DDD wants.
