Dig deep into your closet for those itchy clothes your great-grandparents left you. Put them on and head to [LSU's Rural Life Museum](https://www.lsu.edu/rurallife/?ref=redeyebr.com) for its annual Harvest Days this weekend.

Kidding aside, the event draws hundreds of people eager to glimpse life in 19th-century rural Louisiana.

**Why it matters:** Lately, people have been finding all kinds of ways to go off-grid. They're gathering over mahjong tiles and chessboards and belting out karaoke. It's less about ditching the phone than about putting it down long enough to actually connect with the people around you.

**The details:** Harvest Days takes that movement back even further, to a time before smartphones (and electricity, for that matter), when life ran on the rise and set of the sun. Consider it unplugging turned up to 11.

- Visitors can explore the museum's historic village on Essen Lane, listen to folk musicians, watch traditional dancing and meet skilled artisans keeping centuries-old crafts alive.
- They can see blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, woodworking, spinning, soapmaking, quill-pen writing, basket weaving and other trades that sustained rural Louisiana for generations.
- And do eat some fresh kettle corn. Some modern comforts are worth keeping.

**Harvest Days, 4560 Essen Lane, Saturday Oct. 3 & Sunday Oct. 4, 2026 | 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. |** **0-3 free, 4-11 $10, 12+ $12**
