Forget the mountain home in Cashiers or a beachfront compound along 30-A—the surest sign you’ve landed in the 1% might be a third kid. An economist crunched some Federal Reserve numbers and concluded kid-counting is the new economic indicator.

**Why it matters:** A third child may be what separates the 1% from the merely rich—three-kid families are fading everywhere else, which says plenty about what a crowd costs.

**The numbers:** Among the top 1%, nearly half have three or more children, versus roughly 4 in 10 for everyone else in the top 10%, an [analysis](https://newsletter.mikekonczal.com/p/what-distinguishes-the-1-from-the?ref=redeyebr.com) by economist Mike Konczal shows.

- Start ranking families by net worth rather than income, and the gap widens.
- The research focused on families headed by someone aged 45 to 64 and included biological, adopted and stepchildren, including those from previous relationships. In short, mostly finished families.

**The twist:** Exactly three is what stands out, because four or more kids show up about equally in both groups.

- Exactly three children describes about 34% of top-1% families, versus 24% of the rest of the top 10%.
- Four or more is basically a wash. Translation: a fourth child earns no extra credit.

**What he says:** Konczal wrote [on X](https://x.com/mtkonczal/status/2112180699021340709?ref=redeyebr.com) that whatever made kids tougher for the 99% “just bounced right off the 1%.”

- Three-plus-kid families have been fading in every other income group since the 1990s, while the top 1% barely budged.
- That’s a fancy way of saying children are expensive.

**The bottom line:** The ultimate status symbol in Baton Rouge used to be a membership at the Baton Rouge Country Club—now it might just be three kids and a supersized Mercedes SUV to haul them.
