Renewable energy is on track to become the world’s largest source of electricity this year, surpassing coal for the first time, according to the International Energy Agency.

**Why it matters:** Renewables produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions once facilities are operating. Falling costs—especially for solar—are making them increasingly competitive and accelerating the global energy transition. Plus, sunshine is free.

**By the numbers:** Renewable power generation has more than doubled since 2014.

- Global renewable electricity generation is forecast to rise by more than 8% this year.
- Renewables’ share of the global power mix is expected to grow from 33% in 2025 to 37% in 2027.
- Total renewable generation is projected to increase another 20% by 2027.

**Zoom in:** Hydropower remains the largest source of renewable electricity, but solar is driving much of the sector’s recent growth.

**The bottom line:** Solar and wind have moved from alternative energy sources to central parts of the global power system—and their momentum is still building. All other forms of power, by comparison, have flatlined.
