# Sid Edwards: My bad

Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards [took to Talk 107.3's](https://www.youtube.com/live/dCtK2FwDdfY?si=3tVZ62rzXZFA%5FjTF&t=7205&ref=redeyebr.com) Mornings with Brian Haldane on Monday to apologize to Parish Attorney John McLindon for his public pushback over the city-parish's decision to [file an intervention motion](https://www.redeyebr.com/city-parish-joins-st-george-lawsuit/) in the LRK LLC lawsuit against St. George—and to explain what he thought had happened.

**Why it matters:** Edwards, based on his own explanation, didn't fully understand the difference between the city-parish filing suit against St. George and asking to be present when the incorporation date question is argued in court—a distinction with significant political and financial consequences.

**The apology:** Edwards said he apologized to McLindon for his tone and rhetoric after the two met face to face Friday.

- "I apologize to John on Friday for sort of my tone and rhetoric," Edwards said. "Grown men, we sit down and we talk about it."
- Edwards and Mayor Pro Tempore Brandon Noel also released a joint statement Friday pledging better communication between the mayor's office, the Metro Council and the parish attorney in the future.
- As *RedEye* [reported last week](https://www.redeyebr.com/city-parish-joins-st-george-lawsuit/), the city-parish filed a Petition of Intervention in the LRK case—not to sue St. George, but to be present when a judge addresses the incorporation date question.

**The pattern:** Edwards' frustration with McLindon didn't start with the LRK case. Two sources tell *RedEye* that an "enraged" Edwards "screamed at" the parish attorney after McLindon filed a motion requesting that Baker, Central, St. George and Zachary be added as defendants in DA Hillar Moore's lawsuit against the city-parish over funding of his office.

- Edwards acknowledged he was upset about the legal move, adding he doesn't like litigation as a tool for resolving intergovernmental disputes.
- "I don't want to get in that mess," he said. "I'm of the belief that we can work things out."
- While the parish attorney works for both the mayor and the Metro Council, McLindon is hired by the council and represents their interests in a dispute with the mayor.

**The negotiations:** Edwards has been in informal talks with St. George Mayor Dustin Yates on resolving outstanding financial issues between the new city and the city-parish, as well as with mayors from the other suburban cities on the funding of parishwide constitutional offices. These are two distinct matters.

- Edwards said the discussions were not far enough along to bring to the council. "There was nothing to bring to anybody of true substance yet," he said.
- The city-parish's intervention in the LRK case, Edwards acknowledged, complicated those talks. "It certainly stalled things," he said.

**Incorporation date:** Edwards told Haldane his personal belief is that St. George officially became a city in 2024, not 2019 as St. George argues. It's a distinction with a tremendous difference: a 2019 date could mean the city-parish owes St. George more than $200 million in back sales taxes collected during the years the incorporation was tied up in court.

**The bottom line:** All parties in last week's political dustup have cleared the air, the mayor offered a public mea culpa and all sides are pledging to work together moving forward.
