Moving out is not the same as moving off the family payroll: U.S. parents gave **$26.6 billion** to adult children living outside their homes in 2024.

That’s quite the parental payroll, with the [U.S. Census Bureau](https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2026/09/parental-support-to-adult-children.html?ref=redeyebr.com) reporting that the money flowed from 2.6 million parents to 3.7 million children age 21 or older. The support was voluntary and helped cover bills, food and other expenses.

**Why it matters:** A move-out date does not always come with financial independence. And this total leaves out money parents spent supporting adult children who still lived under the same roof—meaning it does not capture the full parental tab.

**The deets:** The median amount parents provided during the year was **$4,725**. Most—72.7%—supported one adult child. Another 18.8% helped two, while 8.6% supported three or more. Apparently, the family plan can have several lines.

Parents who provided support had a median annual income of $63,440, compared with $41,930 among parents who did not. They were also more likely to be employed, hold at least a bachelor’s degree or earn money from stocks and bonds.

The children may have left the nest. The payroll department remains open.
