A bigger slice of success

Elsie’s Plate & Pie is already one of Baton Rouge’s hardest tables to grab without a wait. Now the Government Street favorite appears to be expanding in a way that could ease the pressure on the main dining room—and maybe make it a little easier to get that Pimento BLT or steak and frites before your patience expires.

What’s happening: Construction is underway in the space next door to Elsie’s, across a small alley from the restaurant.

What we’re told: The added space is expected to become Elsie’s prep kitchen, shifting some of the back-of-house strain out of the main restaurant. That matters because Elsie’s is not exactly hurting for demand. It is one of Baton Rouge’s most popular restaurants, with lines forming soon after opening.

Why this should help:

  • Speed up service in the main restaurant
  • Give Elsie’s more room for pie production for holidays and Pi Day (tomorrow)
  • Open the door to a dedicated pie shop, shifting grab-and-go traffic away from the dining room

What we don’t know: The owners did not return phone calls before publication, so more details of the renovation and timeline were not immediately available.

The bottom line: Mid City is sustaining investment, with Government Street a destination for the region. In Elsie’s block alone, there is a pottery studio, a thrift shop and, soon, Las Brujas, a Latin-inspired coffee shop that will sell local produce and wines.
