- Description: Rent-a-mom services are becoming the latest college craze.
- Author: JR Ball

Remember when going off to college meant a teenager learning how to become a self-sufficient adult? Those times, they are a-changin'.

**Why it matters:** LSU's enrollment boom means the Ol' War Skule is a ripe market for the trend of paying someone else to handle what a first-year, away-from-home student was once forced to learn on their own.

**The pitch:** For $49 a month to $1,600 a year, parents are hiring a local stand-in mother for their college kid at schools across the SEC and beyond—mindyKNOWS covers 9 campuses from Wisconsin to UCLA, and Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Baylor each have their own local version.

- She delivers birthday balloons and jumps dead car batteries.
- She drives sick kids to the ER and keeps a list of trusted local doctors.
- She'll handle move-in day or bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies for a homesick freshman.

**Says it all:** "It's not a DoorDasher. It's like a surrogacy," [one father](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/13/well/college-concierge-mom.html?unlocked%5Farticle%5Fcode=1.A1E.Fsdf.9Qduk%5F9S11ni&smid=url-share&ref=redeyebr.com) told *The New York Times*.

**The catch:** Penn sociologist Annette Lareau says the short-term win for parents and kids is real—her worry is that kids never learn to lean on themselves or their peers if a paid adult is always one text away.

- A BYU researcher draws a finer line: a care package isn't the problem; it's the slide into "doing it for them"—assembling furniture, negotiating a lease, standing in for the kid's own effort.
- Helicopter-parenting researchers call this the same hovering, just relocated—an instinct that never sat well with them for free, and now comes with an invoice.

**Growing LSU demand:** Northeastern kids now enroll at LSU at nearly 6 times their 2014 rate, the [steepest climb](https://www.redeyebr.com/lsu-goes-boom/) in the SEC.

**Tiger town supply:** Rent-a-moms haven't called Baton Rouge yet, but the supply chain's already here.

- Cyclone Laundry has run pickup and delivery next to student housing since 2005, and laundry apps Poplin and Hampr have since moved into the same market—joining Suds, an app LSU students built themselves.
- MaidPro courts LSU parents directly for cleaning.
- A decade ago, LSU alum Marcia Barton ran her own homemade version, Love in a Box, once calling herself "almost like a concierge mom."

**The bottom line:** Somewhere in Baton Rouge, a mom with an aircraft carrier-sized SUV and a soft spot for homesick freshmen is sitting on a business plan. Whether that's a good thing is a sign of the times.
