Every Tuesday at 6 p.m., chessboards go up at La Divina Italian Cafe on Perkins—wine and gelato optional, silence over the board mandatory. No music. No small talk requirement. Just two people and sixty-four squares.

**Why it matters:** Baton Rouge's under-35 crowd keeps finding new excuses to put the phone down and sit across from a stranger, and chess is turning out to be one of the most literal versions yet—no DJ, no game-show host, nothing standing between two people and the board.

**The shift:** Chess's Gen Z boom started online. **Rich irony:** The generation that discovered chess through a screen is now logging off to play it in person.
