Dogs have been a man’s best friend for at least 5,000 years longer than believed. Scientist conclude that from a dog bone discovered in an English cave where humans lived 15,000 years ago.

**The details:** Researchers have found older dog-like bones before, some dating back 33,000 years, but those fossils have been disputed for years. Were they actually dogs, or just wolves that happened to look similar. This find appears to settle the matter. Genetic testing showed the animal was unmistakably a dog, and that it was likely living off food tied to humans.

**A Baton Rouge note:** This parish is home to one of the country’s finest animal shelters, a $12 million refuge built entirely from donated money and kept alive by the generosity of people.

**Immanuel Kant put it concisely:** “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”

**Bottom line:** Baton Rouge’s shelter is a reminder that the bond with animals matters deeply to our people. You can strenghten that bond by donating to the shelter at [CAA's website](https://www.caabr.org/?ref=redeyebr.com), and buy a ticket to its annual gala, [the FurBall](https://furballbr.org/?ref=redeyebr.com), which is in mid-April.
