Baton Rouge's cost of living runs **10% below** the national average and 7% below the rest of Louisiana, according to RentCafe's 202\. 

**Why it matters:** People choose a place to live for two main reasons: it's affordable and life there is good. East Baton Rouge Parish has half that equation in its favor.

**By the numbers:** The typical East Baton Rouge home is worth about $206,000—roughly 44% below the typical U.S. home, per Zillow. Groceries are 3% cheaper here and healthcare is 12% less than the national average, RentCafe data shows.

**Yes, but:** Cheap isn't the same as good. Rush-hour traffic ranks among the worst in the country, public transit is barely a thing, and the murder rate is down, but not as much as the national decline. Most striking: about one in every four people lives below the poverty line, compared to about 11% nationally. 

**The bottom line:** People choose a place to live for two main reasons. Baton Rouge has one of them covered—it's cheaper to live here, housing included. What the parish still doesn't have is the other reason people put—a high quality of life.
