Baton Rouge has its own tapestry now—a modern version created by the library’s Brandon Reilly for the upcoming Maker Faire.

The original Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth nearly 230 feet long and roughly 20 inches tall. It tells the story of the events leading to the Norman conquest of England, when William, Duke of Normandy, invaded, conquered and earned the much-better nickname William the Conqueror.

The story ends with the Battle of Hastings in 1066\. The rare and delicate work is being displayed under controlled environmental conditions at the British Museum, marking the first time it has left France in nearly 1,000 years.

Baton Rouge’s version was made by one man and a machine.

Reilly, the library’s coordinator of special projects, used his wits—and ChatGPT—to create a 30-foot account of the campaign and Battle of Baton Rouge.

The local tapestry tells how Bernardo de Gálvez and a gumbo crew of soldiers and volunteers used deception to outmaneuver the British. Men made a commotion for hours to draw British attention and fire while Gálvez quietly positioned troops along another flank.

The maneuver helped Gálvez capture the fort at Baton Rouge, prompting the British to surrender a fort at Natchez and ending British control of the Mississippi River.

Reilly’s tapestry is more than a history lesson. At the annual Baton Rouge Maker Faire, children will be invited to create their own tapestries on whiteboards.

They’ll have to do it without AI, using their own wits, just as Gálvez did when he got the best of the Brits in Baton Rouge.
